The Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) acts as Latvia’s national academy of sciences dedicated to the promotion of scientific and scholarly endeavour, the study of the history, culture and language of Latvian people and the state, as well as the study of Latvia’s natural resources and environment. An agreement with the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia, signed in 2008, delegates to the Academy the duties of coordination and implementation of European science programs and projects: COST, EUREKA, EUROSTARS, the joint Baltic Sea regional research program BONUS, the EU Joint Technology initiatives and the functions of national funding agency for ERA-NET projects, and popularization of science.
